how Play therapy works

We believe kids deserve a place where they can feel heard and not judged.

Play therapy starts with connection. Before anything else, our therapists focus on building trust and rapport with your child—because healing begins when a child feels safe, seen, and understood. Using play-based techniques, we enter the child’s world on their terms, whether through art, storytelling, imaginative play, or games.

As the therapeutic relationship grows, play becomes the pathway for expression. Children often don’t have the words to explain what they’re feeling, but they do show us—through themes, behaviors, and play patterns. Our therapists are trained to observe, interpret, and gently guide these moments to help kids process emotions, build insight, and develop healthy coping strategies.

Throughout the process, we collaborate with caregivers (without breaking the child’s trust) to reinforce growth outside the therapy room. The goal? To help children feel more secure, regulated, and resilient—in play, and in life.

imagine if…

Your Child had a safe place where big feelings weren’t scary - but understood

Play therapy helps kids express what they can’t always say, in ways that feel natural and non-threatening.

Your Child could build real tools to manage anxiety, frustration, or change

Through play, kids learn to problem-solve, regulate emotions, and grow confidence from the inside out.

Meltdowns became moments of connection, not chaos

By understanding what’s underneath the behavior, play therapy helps kids—and their parents—respond with empathy and skill.

I want you to know:

I see you.

Parenting a struggling child can feel overwhelming, confusing, and sometimes isolating. You’re doing the best you can with what you have—and that matters more than you think.

Common questions about child therapy

  • Your child’s confidentiality is important to us. While we will keep you informed about what we are working on together, the specifics of our conversations will remain confidential. In the event your child’s therapist feels it would be useful to share something with you, they will discuss this with the child and how it can be communicated to you in a positive, constructive way.

*NOTE: As mandated reporters, we will always take appropriate action in the event your child poses a danger to themselves or others or discloses abuse. In such instances, breaking confidentiality becomes necessary to protect your child.

  • This depends on your child’s unique needs and the goals we set together for therapy. Some children need support for just a few months, while others stay with their therapist over longer period of time. We’ll monitor their progress regularly throughout our work, and help both you and them make informed decisions about continuing care.

  • Standard therapy sessions are 45 minutes long. We recognize there may be need for appreciated sessions, and your therapist can discuss this with you.
