Child Life

As parents and caregivers, we want to protect our children from life’s challenges and heartaches. This often involves withholding information and even telling lies. Even when caregivers keep information from their children, these children often know that something is going on and as a result, they come up with their own answers. These answers are often incorrect and far worse than the actual situation. Children need accurate and timely information in order to cope with life's challenges.

Child life specialists are here to help you and your children with age appropriate information and support in order to promote healthy coping.

Child life specialists are specially trained individuals who can help reduce trauma that results in injury, illness, or loss. Using psychoeducation, therapeutic play, and psychosocial support child life specialists make the unknown known and help children of all ages cope with an illness, injury, or trauma.

Here is a list of what we can do to help your child with medical experiences:

  • Provide developmentally appropriate education about a diagnosis, procedure, or other medical event

  • Establish a coping plan for specific procedures a child may experience

  • Utilizing therapeutic play to understand a specific medical event or diagnosis

  • provide guidance on how to talk to your child about challenging experiences like the death or illness of a parent or family member

  • Provide on site support for procedures

  • and more!

Please note: We cannot directly bill insurance for child life services. This is an out of network service. We can provide you with a superbill which you can then submit to insurance for reimbursement.
